Colorectal Cancer Screening Outreach Project - Vietnamese Social Services (VSS)
Vietnamese
Social Services (VSS) recently concluded a six-month colorectal cancer outreach
project among the Vietnamese community in the Twin Cities. The goal of the
project that was conducted from January to June was to increase awareness of
colorectal cancer and the importance of screening.
Partnering with the
American Cancer Society, staff tailored the organization’s Friend-to-Friend
model to educate Vietnamese about the importance of early screening and to
break down barriers and fears that individuals may have regarding colorectal
cancer screening.
In addition to conducting
classes and distributing health literature, the project promoted education and
screening through a media campaign developed in cooperation with community
partners such as KFAI Radio, Asian American Press, Ngay Nay Minnesota, and Little Saigon News. Events
such as the Vietnamese New Year and church festivals were also used as venues
to disseminate colorectal cancer screening messages.
