Enhancing Smoker Utilization of QUITPLAN Helpline Through Support Persons - Mayo Clinic
This study
is being done to learn the effectiveness of a telephone-based program for
support persons who are concerned about a cigarette smoker. This study will help support persons learn
new ways to be supportive as well as encourage a smoker to call the QUITPLAN
Helpline.
Project Description The study
will utilize a randomized, two-group design with repeated mailed assessments
completed by support persons at baseline (week 0) and follow-up at weeks 4 and
26.
Nonsmoking
adults will be recruited throughout the state of Minnesota using mass media approaches. Support persons will be randomly assigned to
receive either:
- The written
materials only (control group; N=267), or
- The
telephone-based intervention, consisting of the same written materials plus
three weekly, proactive, 15-minute telephone sessions (experimental group;
N=267).
The
written materials, mailed to the support person’s home, will include a study
specific QUITPLAN Helpline toll-free number and a code that includes the
support person’s study ID number that the smoker should provide the QUITPLAN
Helpline intake staff if he/she requests QUITPLAN services.
The
smoker will receive 6 months of free QUITPLAN services, starting on the date of
study enrollment, if they call the QUITPLAN Helpline and enroll in the
program.
