Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Minnesota Cancer Alliance?

The Minnesota Cancer Alliance is a coalition committed to implementing the state’s first comprehensive cancer control plan, Cancer Plan Minnesota 2005-2010. Founded in 2005, the Alliance evolved from collaborative efforts to create the plan. It is a voluntary association that offers free membership to organizations and individuals interested in working to reduce the state’s cancer burden. The Alliance provides the cancer community with opportunities to:

·         Build new partnerships

·         Reduce unnecessary duplication of efforts

·         Improve coordination of resources

·         Develop innovative strategies

What are the priorities of the Alliance?

The Alliance is focusing on implementing activities in the four initial priority areas outlined in Cancer Plan Minnesota:

  • Increasing colorectal cancer screening
  • Promoting policies to reduce the harmful effects of tobacco
  • Reducing disparities in cancer screening and treatment
  • Enhancing quality of life for cancer survivors and their caregivers

How are these priorities supported?

Task forces and project teams have been formed to address each cancer plan priority.  Active volunteers across the state meet regularly to work on their respective projects in a coordinated effort to advance the plan.  Project teams are:

·         Conducting free colorectal cancer screening days and advocating for Minnesota's Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Act to provide funding for a free statewide screening program for under- or uninsured individuals

·         Working with insurers, employers and purchasers to expand smoking cessation benefits

·         Collaborating with health care systems and worksites to conduct screening and education interventions to reach the underserved

·         Partnering with health systems to improve continuity of care through the use of survivor care plans

Who is a part of the Alliance?

Health care organizations, cancer centers, community-based groups and volunteers have joined the Alliance. As this new coalition evolves, membership continues to grow. For a complete listing of member organizations, visit www.mncanceralliance.org.
