Discussion: Shifting Gears

Colorectal Discussion

·         The MCA has suggested there be a main focus as an organization

·         The suggested focus is Colorectal cancer as many project groups are focusing on this topic already

·         After discussing some of the pros and cons Makeisha asked for a show of hands in support of focusing on colorectal cancer. Majority was in support.

·         The question then became where should our focus be

o        Gaylynn expressed an interest in Greater MN having free colorectal screening opportunities

o        David then stated that Marjorie Johnson and Rebecca Thoman, ACS employees, have been involved in helping the Colorectal Cancer Initiative group connect to Greater MN health systems to offer screening events

o        Lisa questioned if we continue to screen will we get to a point where the government could say there is no need to fund this on a state level.

o        David answered with there is 40,000 to 50,000 people in MN over the age of 50 that are un/underinsured and we are screening 26/event

·         Suggestion from HDTF to the Steering Committee was to play a role in helping find funding for projects

Possible Future Action Steps:

§         Develop talking points about Colorectal screening events

§         Education session which should included:

o        Knowing your family history

o        Include diabetes and other chronic disease that effect colorectal cancer

o        Visual aids around the screening procedure

§         Education specific for immigrants

Are there other projects we should focus on?

·         Clinical Trials for Cancer and Education/Awareness

·         Cancer Prevention

More discussion is needed around these topics at our next meeting:

·         Elaborate more on the colorectal discussion/other projects of focus

·         Where do we want the HDTF to go for the rest of the year

·         How to find and apply for funding
