HEALTH DISPARITIES TASKFORCE MEETING

Community Based Participatory Research Grant- Roshan Paudel/Lindsay Lampi
· Nat’l grant funding opportunity which 4-states in the Midwest can apply (Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin)
· Priority areas for the grant are: Colorectal/Breast/Cervical screening, Quality of Life, Access to care, Tobacco
· Up to 25,000/yr for 2yrs or 50,000 for 1 yr
· The project can be new or existing
· Each community will be teamed up with an expert partner or researcher (you can suggest your own otherwise ACS can help with matching)
· Each proposal should include an evaluation plan and budget (process and outcome evaluations will be accepted)
· What is not covered
o expert partner or researcher salary
o screening costs or medical procedures/services
· Timeline
o September 11, 2008: Letter of Intent is available
o October 23, 2008: Letter of Intent is due
o November 17, 2008: Invitations to submit full application sent
o January 19, 2009: Completed applications due
o February 4, 2009: Announcement of awards
o February 18, 2009: First grant installment disbursed
o September 11, 2009: Progress Report due (one-year grant)
o September 25, 2009: Second installment disbursed (one-year grant)
o March 12, 2010: Progress Report due (two-year grant)
o March 26, 2010: Second installment disbursed (two-year grant)
o March 12, 2010: Final Report due (one-year grant)
o March 11, 2011: Final Report due (two-year grant)

ACTION REQUEST: Is it possible to fund a small local campaign around colorectal awareness whether it is producing a product or paying for placement? Answer: I imagine if promotion is part of the budget and justified for an overall initiative that could be considered. But not just a request for an advertising or promotional campaign.
MCA Steering Committee- DeAnna Lazovich
· Goal for MN colorectal screening is 74% and our actual overall screening rate is 62% for the state of MN
· MCA colorectal focus will be on
o Increasing demand from the community to get screened
o Increase delivery of screening
o Increase access to screening (Focus of the CRC Taskforce)
· DeAnn Lazovich ask if there is an interest from the HD Taskforce in increasing the demand from the community
· Andrea Leinberger-Jabari, Marge Johnson, Kate Onyeneho expressed an interest
ACTION REQUEST: DeAnna Lazovich is looking for persons who are interested in developing a planning group to increase demand among the community to get colorectal screening. Paper the Town (rural women)

Worksite project (Vietnamese women)
- Stearns manufacturing has been sold and rumors have been that it will close
- Late breaking news -3 days in Oct have been scheduled for the mammography van
- Still assessing what, who & how to provide education
Reaching Somali women
- Fartun Hussein will participate in a Somali community health fair in spring 2009
- Fartun is the grantee for grant/MIHV Creating CommUNITY-implement CHW program in St Cloud
- providing education to clinic staff on Somali community & health, and also on CHW/ continues to be an avenue to reach Somali women in St. Cloud

· Combating Cancer in your community will be featured at the Oct. 22-24 at the MN/WI American Indian Cancer Conference at Black Bear Casino Resort in Carlton, MN.
o The curriculum is tailored toward native American
o Dr. Perdue will be a presenter
o Lots of resource available to all participants
· Lisa Stephens and Andrea Leinberger-Jabari are currently working on placing the Combating Cancer in your community curriculum in health systems in MN
Pap Team- Marie Tran
· Printing Pap Cards for use
· Distributing Spanish Tool kits
· Working on translation of pap card into Spanish
Let’s Talk About It Grant Update (Prostate) - Keith Allen
· Thus far 7 education sessions have occurred and 154 men have been educated on informed decision making. Because of the nature of the grant screening is not accounted for.

· Jordan Area has decided to combine a bingo event for the elderly with a Let’s talk about it session
· Greater Friendship has decided to combine dinner and prayer meeting with a Let’s talk about it session
ACTION REQUEST: LTAI grant is in the process of applying for a 2nd year of funding and request if agencies in Greater MN are interested in having LTAI session to contact Keith.Allen@cancer.org or Roshan.Paudel@cancer.org
