| Alliance Members Partner to Offer Training for Health Workers | | After the Minnesota Cancer Alliance offered two pilot “Combating Cancer in Your Community” trainings for lay health workers in the Twin Cities in 2006, evaluations indicated interest for additional trainings across the state – especially in rural Minnesota. As a result, a multidisciplinary project team formed including individuals from Fond du Lac Health and Human Services, National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service, Minnesota International Health Volunteers and Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. The team is charged with working with experts to update the curriculum; identifying areas to coordinate trainings; partnering with local organizations to draw experts to instruct the trainings; and executing trainings.
The project team is coordinating the first rural training, which will be held in Carlton, Minn., during the Minnesota/Wisconsin American Indian Cancer Conference Oct. 22, 2008. The team anticipates approximately 60 participants. A pre- and post-test and evaluation results will help the team learn from this rural training to enhance future trainings.
Led by Lisa Stephens, partnership program coordinator for National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service, the team looks forward to offering additional trainings across the state to help prevent cancer by educating individuals who may not otherwise have access to cancer training.
“We are excited to offer this training in a rural community like Carlton,” Stephens said. “Working with partners who have expressed a willingness to share accurate cancer information in under-served communities speaks to the strength of collaboration formed by the Minnesota Cancer Alliance.”
