Summary of CRC interventions
The following summary reflects the activities of Colorado, Ohio and Texas.  These interventions are representative of what other states are doing to increase CRC screening rates. 

General Awareness

·     Partner with organizations representing screening age people AARP and similar organizations to promote screening through their newsletters, meetings and events. 

·     Create speakers bureau to support outreach through partner organizations. 

·     Work place awareness building – participation in health fairs that are sponsored by companies, labor unions and municipalities. 

·     Purchase print, radio and television advertising. 

Health Plans

·     Partner with state Health Plan Association to emphasize importance of screening. 

·     Work jointly with health plans and health plan members to emphasize the importance of screening.  Include HEDIS measures and BRFSS data as persuaders for need to increase rates. 

·     Produce and send targeted mailings for households with at least one:
Member age 65-74 using Medicare mailing lists,
Member age 50 plus by working with state insurance carriers, and
Patient of screening age who uses a community clinic that works with state screening programs. 

·     Encourage reduction or elimination of deductibles and copays for CRC screening. 

·     Provide resources to have a health plan/provider make calls to screening age members – similar to “navigation”. 

Work Sites/Employers

·     Hold by-invitation employer summit on importance of screening and benefits to employers. 

·     Encourage workplace policies that reduce barriers to screening: by providing paid time off for screening. 

·     Provide incentives such as gift cards for receiving screening. 

Provider/Professional Outreach

·     Conference on the Future Directions in CRC screening about current screening modalities directed at primary care doctors to encourage increased referrals. 

·     Work with academic health center to hold Grand Rounds on importance of CRC screening. 

·     Screen the Screener program encouraging free standing endoscopy clinics to screen doctors, nurses and scheduling staff at their referring clinics so that patients of screening age will hear from multiple levels of staff that the procedure is acceptable. 

·     Support development of reminder systems, recognition of providers for increased screening rates.
